OK Guys, I got the chip and ordered a 2nd as soon as I was done testing on a stock 86 944. I used an Escort GT2 Gtimer for results. While the numbers shouldn’t be taken as gospel, the differences from one run to the next should be accurate changes measurements.
Car: 1986 944, 177,xxx miles. front suspension good, back not so good (back would amek it hook up better), stock sways+springs, front KYBs, rear unmatched OEM shocks. bought for really cheap about a year ago… motor has new belts, car has new clutch, plugs newer, plug wires ugly, cap+rotor unknown, vacum leak somewhere… run on Marathon 93 (canton, oh). tires are some kind of pirelli…. on to the tests:
First off, the car sounded amazing from about 4000+. It almost sounded like VTEC kicking in on a Honda…
It should be noted that I tested in 3 different areas: 1 being pulling out of my driveway and going slightly uphill, 2 being coming back to the driveway and slightly downhill, and 3 being a mix of up and down.
Baseline:
Zone 1: 0-60 13.55, max speed 65.4, 132HP @ 46MPH (note that 0-20 was a whole 3.60)
Zone 2: 0-60 9.52, max speed 66.9, 161HP @ 52MPH (0-20 in 1.83)
Base, snorkel removed (and not a very good run a an A$$ in a chevy 3500 pulled out in front of me in zone 2)
Zone 1: 0-60 0-50 9.45, max speed 56.7, 127HP @ 49MPH (0-20 3.23)
Zone 2: 0-60 12.35, max speed 75.0, 142HP @ 58MPH (0-20 in 2.18)
944MAX chip
Zone 1: 0-60 11.90, Max Speed 61.6, 142HP @ 49MPH (0-20 3.05)
Zone 3: 0-60 10.0, Max Speed 71.5, 151HP @ 47MPH (0-20 1.80)
Zone 3: 0-60 9.65, Max Speed 79.3, 156HP @ 47MPH (0-20 1.63)
Zone 2: 0-60 8.83, Max Speed 87.3, 187HP @ 53MPH (0-20 1.62)
As you can see from the results, the GT2 is pretty sensative to inclines. I wish i had run the car in zone #3 before changing anything. we took the snorkel off because on a chassis dyno, it showed a 4HP improvement. since on the road it didn’t show that, we put it back on to really compare to the baseline. Others said the car stumbled on the frist start, but this car was smoother than ever. the sound changed over 4000RPM. zone 1 was touch to judge as it was me pulling out of the driveway and its hard to lay into it right there. while the numbers are all over the place, comparing them for the zones is actually quite interesting. Zone 1 saw a 10HP increase, which i think is pretty realistic as the drive we all make most is out of our driveways. Zone 2 saw a 26HP difference though which i found astounding as the launches were nearly identical, as were the peak HP points. Zone 3 with the chips is where most drivers would relate as it is your typical up and down curvy road in the counrty.
I can see Russel selling a ton of these chips. 3 of us drove the car in the before and after and we were all amazed, especially having also driven another 86 with an Autothority chip. Definitely a winner! You still have a day left to get the special pricing too! Sure, you’ll have to run 91+, but who cares when the car runs that much better. Its still nothing to a turbo, but really brings these old cars into the modern world.
To compare these numbers, I registered 221HP @ 51MPH in my stock 86 944 turbo (the red one). Thats fairly in line with the MaxHPkit average of 159HP without a turbo.
